Worship Opportunities

Worship Experiences at First UMC

At First United Methodist Church, we honor different life experiences and backgrounds, with the knowledge that we are all united through our common identity as followers of Jesus Christ.

CONNECT: Sundays at 9 a.m.

ConnectA contemporary, coffee-house approach to worship focused on connecting everyone in the community to one another with heavy emphasis on worship through music. Attitude and dress are casual, with a comfortable atmosphere held on the Third Floor of the Education Building, Room 307.

Traditional Worship: Sundays at 11 a.m.

Traditional_Worship VRosenquist - preachingAt this service in the splendor of our 1,000 seat gothic sanctuary, we sing primarily traditional hymns and hear anthems sung by our Chancel Choir, all accompanied by organ, piano, and a variety of other instruments.

Moller Organ

DSCF3365Since 1967 First UMC Charlotte has been blessed with a 3-manual Moller pipe organ. The organ is used to help lead services of worship, wedding ceremonies, funerals and public concerts. The instrument serves as a focal point of the sanctuary. In 2015, The Kathryn Stephenson Pipe Organ Foundation was created to maintain and bring awareness to this marvelous piece of living history located right here at First UMC.  Contact Don Kaufhold, staff organist, for more information about FUMC’s King of Instruments.

Chancel Choir

Chancel ChoirOn most Sundays of the year, 11am worship is lead and enhanced by a dedicated, all-volunteer SATB choir. A variety of musical styles, both accompanied and unaccompanied, are used for the choral anthems.  In December, a large seasonal work is presented to usher in the Christmas season. Contact Pam Jones, Chancel Choir Director, for more information on how to get involved.

FUMC Chancel BellsFirst UMC Charlotte is very blessed to own a 5-octave set of Malmark handbells. We have two handbell choirs, Chancel Bells and Sanctuary Ringers, that lead us in worship at various times during the year (September-May) and also help proclaim the beginning of worship at 11am.  Contact Don Kaufhold for more information on how to get involved.

For families with children ages 3 and under, we have a nursery available during the Traditional and CONNECT services from 8:45 am – 12:30 pm. The nursery is located in a classroom within the Child Development Center and is staffed by two workers each week. Contact Kelly McRell, the Family and Outreach Minister for more information at kelly@charlottefirst.org or 704-333-9081 x102.
